Epigrams, [late 19th century].

Collection of epigrams in 6 volumes, titled: About Literature, About Women, Miscellaneous, Mortuary, Reflective and Didactic, and Satirical, Humorous and Witty. Epigrams are mostly selected from numerous authors, although some originals are included. Each volume is arranged in roughly chronological order, beginnng with anciet Greek and Roman authors. Selections come mostly from European writers, but some Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic passages are translated as epigrams. Most passages fit the standard description of an epigram, however, many fit a looser definition of the term.

Ibbett, a prolific but "unfashionable" English poet, worked in the General Post Office. Many of his works were published privately, either printed by himself on his own press or sometimes, as shown here, in small manuscript editions. A.H.
